World trip to Singapore - tips & costs

We are Family Woess and currently traveling the world. We visited Singapore in June 2024 and tell you everything you need to know in our travel blog.

Let's gooooo!😍

Singapore is an island and city state consisting of 64 islands, located in Asia and is one of the most modern metropolises in the world. With almost 6 million inhabitants, Singapore is one of the richest countries in the world.

Everything is quite expensive, but beautifully green and clean.

Did you know that new buildings have to contain 20% green space? That's why in some high-rise buildings, an entire floor is simply a forest. Pretty cool, we think!

Q & A - important information about Singapore

When is the best time to travel?

Singapore is close to the equator, which means it is humid and warm all year round. Rain is a regular occurrence, with the driest months being March, April and May. Thunderstorms are occasionally possible - only for a short time, but heavy and, above all, LOUD.😅

How long does a flight take?

A direct flight from Frankfurt takes about 12:25 hours.

A flight from Vienna with a transfer takes about 15 hours.

What currency does Singapore have?

How long should I plan for?

Do people speak English?

Are there any special rules?

Can you drink tap water in Singapore?

HIGHLIGHTS

The Jewel Changi Airport alone is worth seeing and has not been voted the best airport in the world several times for nothing. The airport is a green oasis with around 280 shops and restaurants. The ultimate highlight is the waterfall that trickles down from the glass roof.

From here you can easily and cheaply get to the city center by metro.

Gardens-by-the-Bay

A world like something out of a fantasy film - a blooming garden paradise.

We think it looks a bit like the movie "Avatar".😉

In the evening, a light show takes place at the Supertrees every day at 7:45 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.

The highlights of the gardens:

  • Supertrees - are covered in over 700 plant species and are up to 50 meters high. Their splendor is best observed from the "Skywalk" or from the "Supertree Observatory".

  • Cloud Forest - the mysterious cloud forest is in a gigantic greenhouse with a waterfall (our favorite😍)

  • Floral Fantasy - a greenhouse with the most spectacular flowers. Some of them move to the beat of the music.

  • Flower Dome - is the largest of the three greenhouses. Here you will find flowers and plant species from all over the world.

Sentosa Island has beaches, theme parks and more. The cultural district of Chinatown and the bustling Orchard Road with its shopping malls are also highlights that should not be missed.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Singapore is relatively expensive.

  • For first-time visitors, we recommend the Marina Bay district. There are many attractions within walking distance. However, you will have to dig deep into your wallet.

  • The "Orchard Road" area is a bit cheaper but still central.

  • And for those on a tight budget, we recommend "Little India" or "Chinatown". From here, you can also get anywhere quickly and easily using the MRT (subway).

NOTE: The last train leaves at midnight!

(Singapore is a totally safe and peaceful country and you can travel by train at any time without any worries.)

Hotel Tips:

Singapore offers an impressive range of hotels to suit all tastes and budgets. For luxury lovers, the Marina Bay Sands, with its iconic infinity pool, and the Raffles Hotel, renowned for its colonial elegance, are unrivalled. For modern design, you'll love the Andaz Singapore with its urban flair and breathtaking views of the city. If you're looking for centrally located accommodation, Hotel Jen Orchardgateway is the ideal base from which to explore Singapore's best shopping and dining. For travellers on a budget, Hotel 81 offers simple but comfortable accommodation in a central location. Whether you prefer luxury or economy, Singapore has something for everyone.

FOOD & DRINK

Singapore is a foodie's paradise, where diverse cultures are reflected in an unrivalled culinary diversity. From the famous hawker centres where you can sample authentic and affordable dishes such as Hainanese Chicken Rice and Laksa, to world-class restaurants offering modern interpretations of traditional recipes, the city has something for every taste. Whether you want to discover the flavours of Malaysian, Chinese, Indian or Peranakan cuisine, in Singapore you will embark on a culinary journey that will delight both your palate and your senses.

Singapore has an impressive selection of world-renowned restaurants offering both local and international cuisine at the highest level.

Here are some examples:

  1. Burnt Ends : A modern Australian barbecue restaurant famous for its innovative dishes and use of a special charcoal oven, it has secured a place on the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list.

  2. Odette : A French restaurant located in the National Gallery Singapore, it has received three Michelin stars multiple times and is known for its refined cuisine that combines French techniques with Asian ingredients.

  3. Candlenut : The world's first Peranakan restaurant to receive a Michelin star, it offers a modern twist on traditional Straits Chinese dishes, with great attention to detail and using high-quality ingredients.

  4. Les Amis : Another French restaurant known for its exquisite cuisine and outstanding wine cellar, it also has three Michelin stars and is a favourite among foodies in Singapore.

  5. Hawker Chan : Known as the "world's cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant", it offers simple but incredibly delicious soy sauce chicken rice dishes originally sold in a hawker stall.

  6. Waku Ghin : A Japanese restaurant run by famed chef Tetsuya Wakuda, it offers a luxurious tasting menu featuring fresh seafood and sophisticated Japanese flavors, often paired with exquisite wines and sake.

These restaurants are just a small sample of Singapore's diverse culinary landscape, which ranges from street food to haute cuisine.

COST

A short stay in Singapore can vary depending on your travel style, but it is known as one of the more expensive cities in Asia. For budget travelers, accommodation in hostels or basic hotels will cost around €50-100 per night, while mid-range hotels can cost between €100 and €250 per night. Meals in hawker centers are affordable, around €4-10 per dish, while restaurants can be significantly more expensive. Public transportation is cheap and efficient, with daily expenses of around €5-10. Overall, expect to spend around €300-800 for a three-day stay, depending on comfort and preferences.

Example:

  • Flight costs between 600 and 900 euros. In June we flew from Vienna, with a change in Abu Dhabi, and paid around 850 euros per person.

  • Hotel costs vary greatly. We paid around 300 euros per night for a family room.

  • The cost of a taxi ride from the airport to the hotel (city center) is around 12 euros . Taxis are relatively cheap. A ride on the MRT (subway) costs around 1.50 euros . There is a day pass for around 7 euros or a 3-day pass for around 18 euros. And we'll say it again here... NOTE: The last train leaves at midnight!😅

Our conclusion:

We love Singapore and will definitely visit the city more often.❤️

Look forward to the next travel blog - Bali.🏝️😍
